Registration of Spherical Functions from High Angular Resolution Diffusion Imaging using the Heat Kernel Signature and Möbius Transformation
نویسنده
چکیده
High angular resolution diffusion imaging (HARDI) is a powerful variant of diffusion MRI, which images the 3D profile of diffusion at each imaged location in the brain. At each voxel, this leads to an orientation density function (ODF) expressing the probability density of water diffusion in each direction on the unit sphere. As diffusion is greatest along the brain’s axons, these functions are used to map fiber trajectories (tractography) and fiber integrity. To average and compare this data across subjects, we developed a new method based on the heat kernel signature and ‘Möbius voting’ to identify and align peaks of diffusivity on the sphere. We compare our method to standard coordinate-based averaging, and it helps to reinforce consistent features in both synthetic data and real HARDI data. This scheme to compare and integrate HARDI data may be helpful in population-based analyses of brain integrity and connectivity.

Determination of Fiber Direction in High Angular Resolution Diffusion Images using Spherical Harmonics Functions and Wiener Filter
Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) MRI is a noninvasive imaging method of the cerebral tissues whose fibers directions are not evaluated correctly in the regions of the crossing fibers. For the same reason the high angular resolution diffusion images (HARDI) are used for estimation of the fiber direction in each voxel. One of the main methods to specify the direction of fibers is usage of the spher...

In contrast to the more common Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI), High Angular Resolution Diffusion Imaging (HARDI) allows superior delineation of angular microstructures of brain white matter, and makes possible multiple-fiber modeling of each voxel for better characterization of brain connectivity. However, the complex orientation information afforded by HARDI makes registration of HARDI images ...

High angular resolution diffusion imaging has recently been of great interest in characterizing non-Gaussian diffusion processes. One important goal is to obtain more accurate fits of the apparent diffusion processes in these non-Gaussian regions, thus overcoming the limitations of classical diffusion tensor imaging. This paper presents an extensive study of high-order models for apparent diffu...

This paper describes an automated model selection method for analysing the relationship between the order of the spherical harmonic basis functions used to fit high angular resolution diffusion imaging (HARDI) data and the accuracy of the fitting results. The method performs statistical inference on the spherical harmonic expansion coefficients and uses a backward elimination procedure to remov...
